Experts have described a book alleging an affair between Robert Kennedy and his brother’s widow as a “new low”.
The scandalous account claims that Robert began a relationship with Jackie Kennedy shortly after the assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963. It is said to have lasted four years until Bobby’s own death in 1968.
But C David Heymann’s Bobby and Jackie: A Love Story, which features supposed evidence from associates of the Kennedys, including the writers Gore Vidal and Truman Capote, has been panned by people close to the family as well as historians.
Pierre Salinger, Kennedy’s press secretary, has dismissed the account as “bulls***” while Heymann’s critics point to errors in the author’s previous books.
Laurence Leamer, author of three books about the Kennedys, told the New York Daily News, said: “It’s a new low, and you just wonder how far people are willing to go.”
