It had to have the qualities of life instead, such as thickness, abundance, presence, a degree of untidiness. I was after something baroque and dishevelled, with a coat of varnish.’

Human Rights activist and translator Ann Wright is currently in Jerusalem, where she was sent by the Quaker Peace and Social Witness (QPSW) to participate in the World Council of Churches’ Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). Ian Clayton turned fifty on Friday. To celebrate he organised an audacious birthday bash down at his local boozer, with a host of very special musical guests. Amongst them was Clayton Devanny and Lora Midgley of The Freewheel. Here they are performing two songs from the night, ‘Home’ and the wonderful ‘Everything Reminds Me Of Something’, a song that was written in response to Ian’s book, Bringing It All Back Home.

The title makes us laugh, it’s a good fit. Whenever we stand at book stalls, it’s usually the best seller. This prize offers it a small chance of a different kind of acknowledgement.
